NCHS Culinary Arts ProStart Management Team
named 2016 National Champions


May 3, 2016 | Yes Minded | Recently, the New Caney High School Culinary Arts ProStart Management Team attended the 2016 National ProStart Invitational, the country’s premier high school competition focused on restaurant management and culinary arts.


Competing in Grapevine, Texas, team members Hayley Lewis (captain), Mysterie Roberson, Kayla Gebauer, and Yarumi Guerrero represented Texas as state champions and placed first out of 42 teams in the nation.


This is the first year these four students have competed in ProStart competitions and they worked very hard to achieve this goal. At the national competitions, these students have accumulated approximately $360,000 in scholarships collectively from various college and universities.


Sponsored by Ecolab, students competing in the management competition were tasked with developing the next promising restaurant concept and presenting it to a panel of industry judges. The wining concept was, America’s Best, a restaurant celebrating our veterans and first responders. Students developed a written proposal complete with marketing strategies, menu development, restaurant layout and décor. Their problem solving skills were also put to the test as they had to quickly solve challenges faced by managers daily.


Cherie Busch, lead instructor of the management team, and Laura Johnston, co-sponsor, are in awe of the accomplishments of these students and would like to thank all those who supported and aided these students from regional competition, to state and finally national competition. They would also like to thank the Texas Restaurant Association and ProStart because without them these opportunities would not exist for their students.
