Friday, September 13, NCISD celebrated Shine Bright Day across the district. Created to coincide with Suicide Awareness Month, Shine Bright Day is a positive, age appropriate approach for elementary aged students to promote belonging and encourage positive thoughts.

The purpose of Shine Bright Day, according to NCISD Director of Counseling, Janet Graczyk, is to remind students that we are all connected and to look out for one another.

“We want students to know that they are not alone. We want them to walk away knowing they matter and to encourage others that they matter as well,” Graczyk said.

Although Shine Bright Day was created with elementary students in mind, it was important to show we are all connected by extending this positive approach to middle and high school students. Students of all grade levels participated by wearing neon colors on Friday, and some campuses celebrated Shine Bright Week by dressing up each day. During this time, students learned about managing emotions and celebrating diversity and uniqueness.

Overall, campuses district-wide used this week to develop a strong sense of community by emphasizing connectedness and encouraging students to look out for each other.
