On January 14, the New Caney ISD Special Education department hosted NCISD’s Dyslexia Night. This annual event is designed to provide families with education on dyslexia and resources to help their students thrive both academically and emotionally.

“Dyslexia is a lifelong condition, however with support and interventions, students can learn to manage these challenges,” said Special Education Coordinator, Melissa Binetti.

Each year, the Dyslexia Night event is modified to incorporate different aspects of dyslexia. This year, parents engaged in simulations in order to understand how dyslexia affects their students on a daily basis. With each simulation, parents were able to explore their feelings, frustrations, and successes, allowing them to better connect with their child. Each simulation also provided parents with resources to use at home when helping their child with homework, reading, and writing.

“The goal is to help students and families learn more about Dyslexia so that they can reduce frustrations and overall boost self-confidence as students become more and more successful,” Binetti said.

The Dyslexia Night successfully brought families together to learn about the challenges and strategies associated with dyslexia. By offering hands-on simulations and practical resources, the event empowered parents to better understand their children’s experiences, reducing frustration and boosting confidence for both students and families.
