This year, eighth grade White Oak Middle School (WOMS) student Julian Zapata earned the unique distinction of being named All-Region in Band, Choir and Orchestra. Auditions for All-Region ensembles are held by the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and require students to perform a prepared music for a panel of judges. Over 1000 students audition for All-Region Choir, with only 120 boys earning a spot. Over 400 students audition for All-Region Band, with approximately 240 making the cut and advancing to compete for All-Region Orchestra. Of those, just 35 students are selected. Earning All-Region honors in all three categories is an exceptional accomplishment.
“I've been teaching choir for over 20 years and have never had a student make all three,” said WOMS Choir Director Debbie Saul. “He’s made All-Region Choir two years in a row, which is no small feat, and this year he really outdid himself by making All-Region Band, Choir, and Orchestra. That kind of versatility and musicianship is rare, especially at the middle school level.”

Julian began practicing music when he enrolled at WOMS in the sixth grade. Inspired by his family’s love of movies, Julian says that he followed in his brother’s footsteps and joined both band and choir with the hopes of playing music similar to the Marvel soundtracks.
“We all grew up watching Marvel together, and when I heard the music, it sounded so good,” Julian said. “Now, my favorite part [of making music] is hearing it come together in class.”
Julian is in his third year of the WOMS fine arts program, and refines his skills through consistent practice. Students begin working on their TMEA audition music as early as August, dedicating months to rehearsals before competing in November. His commitment to music, combined with support from his directors, led to his success in all three ensembles.
“Julian’s success reflects his dedication, growth, and commitment as a musician, supported by the fine arts opportunities at White Oak Middle School and NCISD,” said WOMS Band Director Adam Schmitz. “Through high-quality instruction and consistent performance experiences, students like Julian develop the skills, confidence, and discipline needed to succeed at a high level.”
According to Ms. Saul, Julian’s friendly personality and excitement inspire those around him to keep pursuing excellence.
“Julian is a huge asset to our choir program,” Ms. Saul said. “He works hard, loves what he does, and it shows. His enthusiasm for music is contagious, and he makes everyone around him better. We’re incredibly lucky to have him.”
