Reading Language Arts

New Caney ISD implements Science of Reading research-based literacy instruction in addition to a structured literacy model designed for students to have a variety of authentic reading and writing experiences. The district curriculum supports the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards set by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and include the interconnected nature of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking through the seven integrated strands of developing and sustaining foundational language skills; comprehension; response; multiple genres; author's purpose and craft; composition; and inquiry and research (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills §§110.2-110.7, 2017).

Math

During the elementary years, instruction in mathematics seeks to build a solid foundation in our students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics as well as their procedural skills. This strong base provides the foundation for students as they move into higher levels of mathematics and thrive in the future.

Our curriculum supports learning through exploration and solving real-world problems across all grade levels and allows students to construct meaning and make sense of learning mathematics.
Our students are challenged to explain their solutions and make connections allowing them to value learning mathematics.
Our classrooms engage students in learning mathematics through discussion and the sharing of ideas.
As teachers, we facilitate student use of resources, manipulatives, tools, and technology to solve mathematically rich, real-world problems that meet the needs of a diverse population of learners.

Math instruction in New Caney ISD supports the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards set by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). New Caney ISD classrooms reflect a change in the emphasis of mathematics instruction with a high level of interaction among students and teachers. While math instruction continues to include the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, students are also working to better understand mathematics. They are developing reasoning skills that allow them to think flexibly about numbers and adapt their thinking to solve a variety of challenging problems. Our teachers are helping students develop the skills needed for a lifetime of learning using the most successful strategies in practice today.

Science

Children are born scientists with a natural curiosity about the world. Elementary science introduces and lays the foundation for each of the four main disciplines of science: physics, chemistry, life science, and earth and space science. It also introduces the concepts of scientific investigation and reasoning. This strong base provides the foundation for students as they move into higher levels of science and thrive in their future.

The National Academy of Science defines science as the “use of evidence to construct testable explanations and predictions of natural phenomena, as well as the knowledge generated through this process.” In New Caney ISD our teachers provide students opportunities to learn by doing and not by the passive transfer of information from teacher to student. Our students, including their experiences, preconceptions, questions, and interests, are a part of each lesson.

Social Studies

In social studies, NCISD students build a foundation in history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, science, technology, and society; and social studies skills. The content, as appropriate for the grade level, enables students to understand the importance of patriotism, function in a free enterprise society, and appreciate the basic democratic values of our state and nation as referenced in the Texas Education Code (§28.002 h).

The eight strands of the essential knowledge and skills for social studies are intended to be integrated for instructional purposes. Therefore, social studies knowledge and skills will be integrated into reading and writing instruction when appropriate.

Health & PE

Health

The goal of health education in New Caney ISD is to provide instruction that allows students to develop and sustain health-promoting behaviors throughout their lives. Students have the opportunity to learn the ability to gather, interpret, and understand health information; achieve health literacy; and adapt to the ever-evolving science of health.

Physical Education (P.E.)

Physical education in New Caney ISD follows the TEKS adopted by the Texas Education Agency. Physical education provides cognitive content and instruction designed to develop the motor skills, knowledge, and behaviors, for physical activity and physical fitness. Physical education is designed to develop motor skills, knowledge, and behaviors for active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy, and emotional intelligence.
