Counseling

The guidance curriculum is designed to systematically provide lessons to students that facilitate growth, development, and transferrable skills in the areas of education, career, personal, and social development.  Intrapersonal effectiveness, interpersonal effectiveness, post-secondary education & career readiness, and personal health & safety are content areas addressed through the guidance curriculum. The guidance curriculum is structured to systematically deliver lessons that promote student growth, development and the acquisition of transferable skills in education, career, personal and social development. 

Elementary School

In elementary school, the focus is on building good citizens, personal health and safety, and developing the social emotional skills necessary to be successful academically.  This is where students take their first look at future careers and begin to hear about post-secondary opportunities.

Middle School 

In middle school, counselors continue to work on developing social emotional competency, good decision-making in regard to personal health and safety, planning academic pathways to graduation, and investigating careers, majors, and colleges. 

High School 

In high school, the focus becomes more specific to fulfilling academic requirements for graduation, refining plans for the future, and solidifying the social emotional competencies necessary to achieve post-secondary goals.

The purpose of individual planning is to assist students in developing and addressing academic, career, personal, and social goals.  Students need opportunities to understand and monitor their own development considering their individual needs and specialized circumstances.  In delivering individual planning services, school counselors use knowledge, the ability to integrate district and state requirements, and student preferences to assist students in developing realistic and attainable goals.

The purpose of responsive services is to support students and offer support in their time of need. Responsive services can have three levels of school counselor response: prevention, remediation, and crisis. 

Prevention

Prevention refers to the work of school counselors to ensure all students are educated and knowledgeable of competencies necessary to address troublesome circumstances before they become habitually problematic.  Preventive measures help reduce or eliminate the likelihood of those situations occurring again. 

Remediation

School counselors engage in remediation once a challenging situation has taken place and the student needs assistance in resolving the problem.

Crisis

During a crisis, the school counselor intercedes immediately in high risk situations that may greatly impact the student's personal, social, academic, or career development. 

Responsive services may include consultation with teachers, parents, and others who can assist the student with problematic issues.  Referral to community services outside of school may be provided as needed.

System support connects and coordinates resources and activities both on campus and within the community that indirectly benefit students.
