Homeless Student Resources

The term "homeless" is defined by the McKinney-Vento Act is an individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This can include children and youths who are sharing the housing of others due to a loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason,  who have a primary nighttime residence that is public or not designed as a regular sleeping accommodation for people, or who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings,  or substandard housing.

Homeless Student Transportation

Transportation for McKinney Vento students is available. To request it, please contact the Homeless Liaison. An up-to-date Student Residency Questionnaire will need to be on file for each active student.

Routing Timeline

  • Once the updated forms have been fully approved by all required departments and directed to Transportation, it may take up to 10 business days for arrangements to be made, regardless of whether the student is residing within the attendance zone for their campus of origin.
  • The Transportation Department will attempt to contact the parent, guardian, or unaccompanied youth to confirm the information received. If they are unable to make contact, routing arrangements will be placed on hold until the parent, guardian, or unaccompanied youth contacts the Transportation Department.
  • If the parent, guardian, or unaccompanied youth moves again, the request for transportation services will need to start over with the process.
  • If the student lives outside of the New Caney ISD attendance zone, the Transportation Department must request assistance from the district where the student is currently residing. The assisting district will choose to assist with either AM services or PM services, and NCISD will provide the other half.

No Call, No Show Policy

  • Parents, guardians, and unaccompanied youth must notify the NCISD Transportation Department no later than 5:15 am of any absences for their student(s). If the student does not ride and proper communication is not made, it will be counted as a “No call no show”.
  • After the third no call, no show, services will be terminated immediately.
  • If the parent, guardian, or unaccompanied youth is receiving services from another school district, they must abide by that district’s no call, no show policy.
