• Response to Intervention (RTI) is a monitoring system to track the progress and determine the best track for success for all students, including struggling learners. It has three tiers, or levels of intervention. RTI is also referred to as a Multi Tiered System of Support or MTSS. Students are tracked in these tiers for both academic and behavior 

    Tier 1 - This includes whole group instruction using classroom curriculum and materials. Every student receives tier one instruction. We are always monitoring all student progress to see if any additional intervention is needed. This is the time teachers start to notice an academic, behavioral, or speech need.

    Tier 2 - The students in tier two continue to receive whole group instruction from tier one, but will also receive small group intervention. This specifically targets the areas of need for the student. These interventions can take place in the classroom or in a pull out setting. These interventions will take place for 4-6 weeks. At that time the student placement in the tiers will be reevaluated. If more intervention is still needed, they will move to tier three.

    Tier 3 - A student may be moved to tier three intervention if they are not showing adequate progress in tier two. The students in tier three will continue to receive whole group tier one instruction and small group intervention in the classroom. However, the students will now be in a small pull out group. This intervention will be targeted for their specific needs.

    The goal for students in Tier 2 and 3 is to make growth at a faster rate to fill their instructional gaps. This program is designed to be fluid and always changing. Once the student is able to be successful during grade level instruction, they may return to Tier 1.  

    I teach small groups of Tier 2 and 3 intervention groups throughout the day. These students can range from kindergarten to fifth grade.  I also work with teachers to make sure a high level of instruction is being delivered each day to all students in the class.  We work together to design a more specific intervention plan for struggling students.
