The school counseling program at Tavola Elementary is designed to address the academic, social, emotional, and personal needs of all elementary students. The school counselor will provide classroom guidance lessons, group counseling, individual counseling, lunch bunch opportunities, crisis intervention, consultation, and referral assistance.
Classroom Guidance Lesson topics will cover the following social and emotional learning competencies: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills and social awareness. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Individual Counseling is available, upon request by the student, parent/guardian, teacher, and/or administration. If a referral to a mental health professional is needed, the school counselor will notify the parent/guardian. Parental consent is needed for ongoing short-term individual counseling.
Group Work with students will include, but are not limited to, lunch buddies, friendship, and social skills groups. Parental consent is required.
Crisis Intervention will be in place to prevent crisis and plan for safety.
Consultation will be provided for staff and parents/guardians to plan for student needs and provide resources and education.
