Elementary Math

  • During the elementary years, instruction in mathematics seeks to build a solid foundation in our students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics as well as their procedural skills. This strong base provides the foundation for students as they move into higher levels of mathematics and thrive in the their future.

    • Our curriculum supports learning through exploration and solving real-world problems across all grade levels and allows students to construct meaning and make sense of learning mathematics.
    • Our students are challenged to explain their solutions and make connections allowing them to value learning mathematics.
    • Our classrooms engage students in learning mathematics through discussion and the sharing of ideas.
    • As teachers, we facilitate student use of resources, manipulatives, tools, and technology to solve mathematically rich, real-world problems that meet the needs of a diverse population of learners.

Math instruction in New Caney ISD supports the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards set by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). New Caney ISD classrooms reflect a change in the emphasis of mathematics instruction with a high level of interaction among students and teachers. While math instruction continues to include the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, students are also working to better understand mathematics. They are developing reasoning skills that allow them to think flexibly about numbers and adapt their thinking to solve a variety of challenging problems. Our teachers are helping students develop the skills needed for a lifetime of learning using the most successful strategies in practice today.
