New Caney ISD implements evidence-based literacy instruction in addition to a workshop model designed for students to have a variety of authentic reading and writing experiences. The district curriculum supports the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards set by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and include the interconnected nature of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking through the seven integrated strands of developing and sustaining foundational language skills; comprehension; response; multiple genres; author's purpose and craft; composition; and inquiry and research (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills §§110.2-110.7, 2017).
