Academic Decathlon Team Wins Region VI Competition, Advances to State

24 teams from the Greater Houston region competed in 10 events at the Regional Academic Decathlon Tournament January 29 and 30 at Bellaire High School. The competition included subject-specific exams related to the French Revolution, an essay, speeches and an interview. New Caney’s AcDec team bettered the score of all the 5A teams present to claim the Region Championship and qualify for the State Finals Tournament February 26-28 at San Jacinto College North! This Region title marks NCHS's 14th Regional Championship in the past 15 years!

The nine member team, consisting of 5 seniors and 4 juniors, competed in exams covering Math, French Music, Economics, Chemistry, French Literature, French Art and the French Revolution as well as the writing and speaking events.

Students have been reading, studying and preparing since this past summer for the Region meet against the teams from around the Houston area. New Caney placed ahead of second place Klein HS to avenge last year’s loss, the only Region loss for New Caney in the past 15 years.

The “C,” or Varsity group, is composed of Trent Lawrence, Stephan Holmes and Holly Maguire.
