Porter Elementary Students Make Quilt for Soldiers
Soldiers at Fort Knox, Kentucky sent back several pictures of
their Veterans Day gift Nardy Kainer's third grade dual language
class created for those in the military. The class at Porter
Elementary wanted to say "thank you" to the soldiers for all that
they do to serve and protect the U.S.
Kainer's class had a week-long lesson beginning November 9 on
citizenship, patriotism and the sacrifices that soldiers and their
families make. The students followed up by writing "thank you"
messages which formed the quilt.
"A friend of mine works for the Army in Conroe and he travels all around to various Army bases sharing the quilt with fellow soldiers," says Kainer. So far, the quilt has been to Fort Knox, Fort Hood, and 24,000 feet up into the sky in a C-12 Huron military plane! The aircraft is used for medical evacuation as well as passenger and light cargo transport.
As soldiers send pictures back, Kainer shows them to her students. She plans to invite the friend who took the pictures and other fellow soldiers to speak during career day later in the school year.
