NCISD Police Department Wins Grant for Eddie Eagle Mascot Costume
Eddie Eagle will now stand alongside New Caney ISD Police Chief Troy Wootton when he presents gun safety programs in the school district. The police department was chosen as a winner in the 2009 Texas Eddie Eagle mascot costume contest and will receive a mascot costume valued at $2,650. Chief Wootton says, “I am excited about winning this contest. This tool will assist teaching The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program and will make a great impact on the students!”
The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program teaches elementary school children four important steps to take if they find a gun: STOP! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult. Begun in 1988, The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program has reached more than 21 million children -- in all 50 states. This program was developed through the combined efforts of such qualified professionals as clinical psychologists, reading specialists, teachers, curriculum specialists, urban housing safety officials, and law enforcement personnel.
NCISD PD has been teaching the program, primarily to 2nd graders, since 2006, without the use of the mascot due to budget constraints. This year, Superintendent Kenn Franklin expanded NCISD’s program to include Pre-K through 5th graders.
Aside from assisting the program in the District, the costume will be used at the request of civic organizations.
