Social Studies Overview

Aligned with the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, the prekindergarten-12 Social Studies curriculum incorporates a variety of instructional strategies to develop students’ understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in the history of New York, the United States and global cultures. Students engage in the study of economic systems and how an economy solves the scarcity problem through market and nonmarket mechanisms. Civics, citizenship, and government studies develop an understanding of government, the U.S. Constitution, the basic civic values of American constitutional democracy, and the roles, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship, including avenues of participation.
